Liga Italia | 'Juve Belum Siap untuk Scudetto'

Bagi Felipe Melo, kekuatan Juventus saat ini masih berada di belakang beberapa rivalnya. Meihat performa saat ini, Juve belumlah siap untuk meraih Scudetto.

Skuad arahan Luigi Del Neri itu kini tengah berada di posisi empat klasemen sementara dengan tertinggal enam angka dari AC Milan. Belakangan, Juve lebih sering meraih hasil imbang, di mana tiga dari lima laga terakhir berakhir demikian.

Dengan kerap turun-naiknya penampilan, Melo menilai bahwa Juve masih perlu membenahi banyak hal. Bahkan, jika dibandingkan dengan Milan dan Inter Milan, Bianconeri disebutnya masih tertinggal.

"Kami belum siap untuk memenangi Scudetto. Kami harus terus berkembang. Kami harus realistis dan mengatakan Milan dan Inter ada di depan," ujarnya di Football Italia.

"Kami akan menilai, apakah kami layak untuk meraih Scudetto atau tidak, pada bulan Februari dan Maret. Saat ini, kami hanya fokus dari satu pertandingan ke pertandingan lain," tukasnya.

Pendapat Melo ini mirip-mirip dengan apa yang dilontarkan rekan setimnya, Gianluigi Buffon, beberapa hari lalu. Saat itu Buffon menyebut bahwa Milan lebih difavoritkan untuk menjadi juara saat ini.

Liga Inggris | Chelsea Tunjuk Pengganti Ray Wilkins

Chelsea telah menunjuk asisten baru untuk manajer Carlo Ancelotti. Pengganti Ray Wilkins itu bernama Michael Emenalo. Dia sebelumnya memjabat sebagai Head Opposition Scout.

Wilkins dan Chelsea pisah jalan pada pekan lalu. Jumat (19/11/2010) dinihari WIB tim London Barat menunjuk Emenalo sebagai asisten bagi Ancelotti.

Dilansir dari situs resmi Chelsea, Emenalo bergabung dengan The Blues pada Oktober 2007. Sebelumnya ia menjabat sebagai Head Opposition Scout, divisi yang bertugas memantau tim lawan.

"Sembari menjalani masa transisi dari tugas lama ke tugas baru-nya, Michael akan terus mengamati tim lawan. Di periode awal, dia akan membagi tugas antara menjadi asisten Carlo Ancelotti dan juga mengembangkan kemampuan melatih seiring dengan peran baru yang lebih besar dan lebih berpengaruh yang bakal dia jalani," demikian keterangan Chelsea.

Emenalo adalah pria berkebangsaan Nigeria, lahir 4 Juli 1965 di Abuja. Sebelumnya ia pernah bergabung di sejumlah klub Molenbeek (Belgia), Lleida (Spanyol), dan Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel). Emenalo juga berkiprah di sejumlah klub di Amerika Serikat.

Pria yang semasa aktif bermain menempati posisi bek ini merupakan anggota timnas Nigeria di Piala Dunia 1994. Ia mengantongi 14 caps untuk negaranya.

Liga Inggris | Pires Resmi Milik Villa

Kabar bahwa Robert Pires bakal memperkuat Aston Villa akhirnya mendapatkan kepastian. Pemain asal Prancis itu resmi membela The Villans. Ia dikontrak hingga akhir musim ini.

Kabar tentang bergabungnya Pires ke Villa sudah tersiar sejak awal pekan ini. Jumat (19/11/2010) dinihari WIB, Villa melalui situs resminya mengumumkan telah resmi memboyong pemain berjuluk D'Artagnan itu dengan status free agent.

"Robert Pires bergabung Villa hingga akhir musim. Mantan pemain Arsenal itu telah menandatangani kontrak bersama tim biru dan claret. Villa saat ini masih menunggu pengesahan bagi dia agar bisa ambil bagian dalam laga hari Minggu melawan Blackburn," demikian keterangan Villa lewat situs resminya.

Meski sudah berusia veteran, 37 tahun, Villa menilai pengalaman yang dimiliki pemain berposisi sayap kiri itu bisa mengantar klub untuk meraih prestasi di musim ini.

"Saya sangat gembira bergabung dengan Aston Villa. Mereka termasuk klub besar di Inggris. Saya juga sangat gembira dengan kesempatan bekerja bersama (manajer) Gerrard Houllier. Saya mengenal dia," tukas Pires.

"Saya sudah tak sabar untuk mengenakan seragam ini dan bermain untuk Aston Villa. Saya sudah tak sabar bermain untuk Villa dan kepada fans saya mengatakan: sampai bertemu di Villa Park," kata pemain yang pernah berseragam Arsenal dan Villarreal itu.

Pengalaman Pires juga diharapkan bisa ditularkan kepada para pemain muda Villa seperti Marc Albrighton, Gabriel Agbonlahor, dan Ashley Young.

"Robert merupakan pemain berpengalaman dengan mental yang baik dan dia bisa membantu pemain di sini, terutama pemain muda. Saya yakin kehadirannya bisa memberikan banyak bagi tim dan saya sangat gembira menyambutnya," ujar Houllier.

Liga Italia | 'Pastore Seperti Del Piero'

Presiden Palermo Maurizio Zamparini menyamakan playmaker-nya, Javier Pastore, seperti Alessandro del Piero. Jadi, bila Juventus mencari pengganti Del Piero, liriklah Pastore.

Akhir pekan lalu, Pastore menjadi bintang kemenangan Palermo saat menghantam Catania 3-1. Tiga gol disarangkan oleh pemain berkebangsaan Argentina berusia 21 tahun itu.

Kegemilangan Pastore mengundang ketertarikan dari pelatih Juve, Luigi Del Neri. Di mata Del Neri, bila Bianconeri bisa mendatangkan Pastore, maka dengan senang hati ia akan memberi tempat buat Pastore.

Menyadari ketertarikan Juventus, Zamparini pun mulai 'berpromosi'. Ia membandingkan Pastore dengan Del Piero; kebetulan, keduanya memang bertipe trequartista alias penyerang lubang yang berposisi di belakang bomber utama.

"Dia (Pastore) sudah mirip Del Piero," ungkap Zamparini seperti yang dilansir Football Italia.

"Aslinya, Del Piero dulunya bermain di belakang dua striker sebelum kemudian membangun karir yang luar biasa sebagai penyerang kedua," ulas Zamparini.

Namun untuk mendapatkan Pastore, Juventus dijamin harus merogoh kocek cukup dalam. Zamparini juga tidak menolak bila ada tawaran besar dari klub teras Eropa lainnya.

"Jika Juve menginginkan dia, harga buy out clause-nya 70 juta euro; itu angka yang masuk akan buat saya," kata Zamparini.

"Saya pernah menolak tawaran 25 juta euro dari Real Madrid. Pastore sangat ingin bermain dengan Lionel Messi (di Barcelona), tapi jika ada tawaran 100 juta euro dari Roman Abramovich (Chelsea), saya akan pertimbangkan," tutupnya.

French lessons for the crème anglaise

Another false dawn for England. Another French dressing-down. The euphoria following the Three Lions' impressive Euro 2012 qualifying wins over Bulgaria and Switzerland has been replaced by a familiar torpor.

A dismal 0-0 qualifying draw at home to Montenegro followed by last night's 1-2 friendly reverse to France have sharpened the Fleet Street knives once more for Fabio Capello. The opposition was pertinent. The French team collapsed in mutiny in South Africa, were eliminated by a weak host nation and flew home before the cartes postales. England had it bad but France a lot worse and are still lacking aces Franck Ribéry and Patrice Evra, in exile alongside bête noire Nicolas Anelka, who has probably played his last game for his country.

Yet Laurent Blanc's men played yesterday with verve and élan, like they had turned over a brand new leaf, and showed hints of a real renaissance for a soccer nation that was on top of the world a decade ago. The hosts on the other hand were still warbling from an old hymn book of tired tunes.

To be fair to Capello, it was a friendly and not an eliminator, but the warning signs were loud and clear once more, a mournful drone of English shortcomings echoing around the vast arena. Ball control, positional awareness, tactical acumen, imagination - why are these skills still so hard for English footballers to learn? We should not blame the players - they have not been taught properly. The youthful replacements drafted in fell short with the exception of Newcastle's Andy Carroll, who had a mature and promising debut as a lone target man, bagging air superiority from the off and troubling the French defence at low level on at least one occasion.

The 4-2-3-1 showed Capello had learnt the lesson of Bloemfontein and ditched his static 4-4-2, but too many of its practitioners failed to function. Theo Walcott again showed he has pace and control but little else, Kieron Gibbs and Jordan Henderson proved they had been fast-tracked into the national team too quickly while Gareth Barry, not long ago the subject of a great transfer tussle, was as lethargic and ineffective as he had been in South Africa.

The insertion of Ashley Young and Adam Johnson on the wings after the break, along with Peter Crouch's goalscoring cameo, helped turn the blue tide but equally showed the talent pool is rather shallow at the Football Association. The fact is England need ten Jack Wilsheres pushing for selection.

A (French?) revolution is what is required, with a huge increase in the number of coaches and a wholesale shift in mentality to emphasize skills acquisition and tactical intelligence above winning at youth level. Dennis Bergkamp, exquisitely gifted in a way most Englishmen are not, believes the ages of 8 to 12 are the key ones for developing talent, years when most English kids are not being properly schooled in the game. At Wembley, the blue shirts did the basics better than the whites - controlling and distributing accurately at speed while being aware of the movement of their teammates. English football is still obsessed by the individual instead of the collective, as a cursory glance at any tabloid's back pages will confirm.

"Skill-wise at the moment, the English players are really, really, not at the level", David Ginola said to the BBC post-match. Quite so, England had no-one with the sublime dribbling skills of Samir Nasri, the elegant playmaking of Yoann Gourcuff or the penetrative power of Florent Malouda on display at Wembley.

France's Clairefontaine site has acquired mythic status, with Italy's Coverciano not far behind. St George's Park in Burton-on-Trent will be a huge advance from previous bases at Bisham Abbey and Lilleshall, with the ambitious goal of its coaches training a quarter of a million people to teach football by 2018.

The only hope remains in the future. For the next couple of tournaments we can reasonably expect the motherland of the game to show flashes of hope but then hit that invisible forcefield known as the quarter-finals, while fans and media alike blame particular players or coaches for another England disaster with its roots in youth coaching.
