The Detroit Red Wings have had some great dynasties recently and one of the common pieces in all those dynasties, Nicklas Lidstrom. Today, the veteran defender retired from the NHL at age 42 as he is one of the best defensemen to play the game of hockey. Lidstrom has lifted 4 Stanley Cups in his career while winning the Norris Trophy seven times for being the best defensemen in the NHL. It is appropriate that Lidstrom is retiring during the Stanley Cup due to his success at lifting the Stanley Cup trophy. One of the best attributes of Lidstrom was his leadership and he could be credited for guiding the Red Wings to a couple of their Stanley Cups. Lidstrom's leadership was vitale to the success of the Red Wings and his number 5 will be retired by the Red Wings for good reason. Lidstrom will be a legend in Detroit for a long time as his career is worth celebrating.
